About Bordeaux Wines

Bordeaux is the largest fine wine-making region in the world with 284,320 acres of AOC vines as well as the most legendary. Its sterling reputation is built mostly on red wines, especially those from the Médoc, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and the famous Sauternes sweet white districts. Bordeaux doesn't just mean reds. The region also produces a wide range of other excellent wines including dry and sweet whites, rosé and clairet and sparkling wine called Crémant de Bordeaux.

The World's Leading Fine Wine-Producing Region
Bordeaux was geographically predestined to produce the world's finest wines. The region has an ideal climate moderated by the Gulf Stream, tempered by the Atlantic Ocean with the tallest sand dunes in Europe and the forest of the Landes providing a natural wind barrier protecting the vineyards. The great diversity of micro-climates and soils (limestone, clay, gravel, chalk) are ideally suited to Bordeaux's different grape varieties:

- Reds: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot
- Whites: Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle

The Bordeaux Blend
The richness and elegance of Bordeaux wines is the result of subtle blending of these different grape varieties, combined with centuries of experience, the skills of local winemakers and on-going research by oenologists (wine scientists) and technicians.

Wines for all Tastes
With 57 appellations, more than 9,000 wine-producing chateaux and 13,000 wine growers in the Bordeaux region, you can find sophisticated wines, refreshing wines, aged wines and young wines. Though the top-quality Bordeaux merit the higher prices they command, there is virtually an endless choice of wines in every price category.

Thanks to its size and diversity, Bordeaux produces fine wines for every taste, every mood and every budget. From classified Grand Cru (growth) wines to small chateaux and top brand names from dry whites to sweet whites, from lighter to fuller bodied reds, the choice is yours!

No one could ever totally master Bordeaux. However, armed with the basic information and helpful tips found here, anyone can confidently learn how to choose a Bordeaux wine to please the palate-and the pocketbook.

Château or Brand Wines
Bordeaux wine is usually associated with a "chateau". However, not all the labels refer to a chateau.

When the label specifies "chateau" or "domaine" or "clos" the wine has either been made at the chateau and the location can easily be identified or it has been vinified separately by a cooperative cellar.

If the label does not specify "chateau", there are several possibilities:
  1. The wine may be one of the "second labels" offered by many well-known chateaux. This means that the wine has been produced on the same estate but from different selections.
  2. The other wines are made from the selections created by the merchant or cooperative cellar. The label either refers to the name of the trading firm or the cooperative cellar or to the commercial brand name as well as the guaranteed origin AOC.
