"The tremendously hot summer 2003 is responsible for the magnificent crop in 2004. Spring 2004 was relatively cool and dry. This had two effects. First, flowering took place fairly late in June, under excellent conditions, confirming winegrower' hopes after bud break. Second, water stress set in exceptionally early for an Atlantic climate, where wet spring weather is the norm. This factor accounts for 2004' astounding polyphenols levels. Moderate heat in July stopped vine growth at the end of the month just before véraison (color change). Although the month of August was cool with scattered showers, vine growth did not start up again. The fairly warm dry month of September was decisive, fostering slow, complete ripening of all grape varieties. Obviously, to make the most of this plentiful vintage, it was necessary to limit yields by suitable bunch thinning. However, this is no different from any other year in Bordeaux at estates that place a premium on the quality and reputation of their wine.

As regards red Bordeaux, both Merlot and Cabernet-based wines are very deeply-colored with fresh, ripe fruit and impressive tannins.
However, let us wait a while longer to judge them as they have not even been put into barrel yet.

It is not too early, however, to have a good idea of what the dry white wines are like. These are very fruity, mineral, and elegant, with beautiful acidity and that “sweetness without sugar” on terroirs producing the finest wines.

As for the great sweet wines of Bordeaux, they were able to take advantage of weather conducive to the development of noble rot in September and early October. The wines are fruity, complex, and show good balance between sweetness and acidity. There will be many great bottles in this category of Bordeaux in 2004 as well.

But I have already said too much about these wines – it is up to you to discover them!"

Journalists, producers and professionals were very surprised and pleased by the quality of a 'difficult' 2004 Bordeaux vintage. They are predicting a drop in price, low enough to tempt buyers back after the expensive 2003 vintage.
Bordeaux 2004 is good across the board for both reds and whites, for the Merlot, Cabernet-Sauvignon. They have an intense color fresh and ripe fruit with tannic richness. As far as Cabernet-Sauvignon is concerned, the rains that started on 10 October 2004 seemed to be the decider. Some vignerons harvested in haste on or before that date, while others stayed their hands and managed a fully-ripe crop.
