Chateau Beychevelle Saint Julien Bordeaux France
Under Henri III, Beychevelle was the fief of the dukes of Epernon. The first duke, Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette, French Grand Admiral, was all-powerful. According to the legend, all ships had to lower their sails when they passed in front of his château, as a sign of allegiance, hence the name “Baisse-voile” (lowering of sails) which became Beychevelle over the years. The Château was built in the 17th century and reconstructed by the Marquis de Brassier in 1757. It was recently restored. The estate stretches 250 hectares of which 90 planted with wine. The grapes varieties are Cabernet-Sauvignon (62%), Merlot (31%) and petit Verdot (2%). |
