The vineyard of the Chateau Filhot was created from 1630s to 1650s. The chateau was founded in 1709 by Romain de Filhot. He insisted on using Sauternes appellation instead of “wine from Langon”. Following the French Revolution, the Lur-Saluces family, the heirs to the de Filhots, took over the supervision of the estate. In 1840, Romain-Bertrand de Lur-Saluces joined Chateau Filhot and Chateau Pineay de Rey. The Château Filhot was classified as a second growth in 1855 (Deuxieme Grand Cru Classe). Until the end of the 19th century, the wine continued to be distributed throughout the world as “Château Sauternes”. In 1901, Chateau Sauternes again became Chateau Filhot. In 1935, Countess Durieu de Lacarelle, born Lur-Saluces purchased the vineyard to her brother. It is by this name that the growth has regained its worldwide reputation. Today, the chateau is administrated by Comte Henri de Vaucelles, the grandson of the Countess Durieu de Lacarelle.
The estate is situated all along the south of the Sauternes village.
The 60 hectares of the vineyard are planted on the south-west facing slopes with 60% of Semillon, 36% of Sauvignon and 4% of Muscadelle.
