The Léoville Las Cases is the largest estate of the 3 Léoville estates (Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton and Léoville Poyferré). In 1826, the Léoville estate was divided in 2 parts. One quarter was purchased by Hugh Barton (château Léoville-Barton) and the other part was inherited to Jean de Las Cases. Few years later, in 1840, his daughter gets married with the Baron of Poyferré. In the occasion, Jean de Las Cases gave as dowry, a part of the estate, which was called château Léoville Poyferré. The last part became château Léoville Las Cases. The estate was included as a 2nd Classified Growth in the 1855 classification (Deuxième Grand Cru Classe).
Today, the château belongs to Jean-Hubert Delon and his sister Geneviève d’AltonLéoville Las Cases is one of the great names and wines of Bordeaux. Its passionate commitment to quality is surpassed by no one. The splendid quality of its wines is representative in Saint Julien and in the entire Médoc.
Léoville Las Cases produces arguably the most exotically perfumed wine in the Médoc and this can be partially attributed to the must being fermented at lower than average temperatures, which leads to its youthful aromatic richness being retained.
The wines of Léoville Las Cases are a balanced assemblage. of Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot Noir (20%), Cabernet Franc (12%), Petit Verdot (3%), matured for 18 months in oak barrels (70-80% new). These traditional wines tend to be a shade darker in colour, more tannic, on the palate, they are powerful, concentrated and marvellously well-balanced. Léoville Las Cases is a 2ème Cru Classé in name but produces 1er Cru Classé quality wines.
