Chateau Mouton Rothschild

The Chateau Mouton Rothschild is a Premier Grand Cru Classe of Bordeaux since 1973. The emblem represents the Augsbourg Ram.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild is located near Pauillac in the Medoc. The domain extends over 84 hectares. Its second wines are Chateau Clerc Milon and Chateau d’Armailhac, which are 5th Grands Crus Classes.

Baron Philippe de Rothschild also markets Mouton Cadet. Moreover, they exploit very famous wines abroad in California (Opus One) and in Chile (Almaviva).

Chateau Mouton Rothschild is composed of Cabernet-Sauvignon (83%), Merlot (14%) and Cabernet-Franc (3%). The harvest is realised manually. The wine is elevated in new oak barrels between 19 and 22 months.

The average age of the vines is 45 years-old, and the density of plantation is 10000 vine stocks by hectare.

Since 1993, the domain produces a second wine: Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild is particularly famous for its labels, which are realised every year by a new artist.

Indeed, the first label was realised by Jean Carlu when the company started to put its wine in bottle directly at the Chateau. After the Second World War, Baron Philippe de Rothschild decided to celebrate the victory illustrating the label with the V of victory by the draftsman Philippe Jullian.

Here is a list of some artists who illustrated the labels of Chateau Mouton Rothschild: Masson, Dali, Villon, Matta, Alechinsky, Miro, Chagall, Soulages, Picasso, Delvaux, Bacon, Balthus, Tapies, Lippold, Moore, Cesar, Arman.
