Chateau Margaux wine: Red and White wine
The domain extends over 262 hectares in the Medoc. Chateau Margaux Wine is located in the appellation Margaux in the village of Margaux. It is classified Premier Grand Cru Classe since 1855.
The soils are mainly gravelous, but can also be mixed with clay.
During the 12th century, it was called “La Mothe Margaux” and it did not have vines. At the end of the Hundred Years’ War, the Bordeaux wines enter on the British market and King Richard decided to use Chateau Margaux wine as his own table wine. At the end of the17th century, Chateau Margaux had 265 hectares of vines. In 1801, The Marquis de la Colonilla bought the Chateau which was lying fallow following to the revolution, and in 1810 he built the Chateau “Le Versailles du Medoc” and the building of exploitation with the help of the architect Louis Combes.
87 hectares are reserved to Margaux red wines, with an annual production of about 200.000 bottles. The grapes varieties are: Cabernet-Sauvignon (75%), Merlot (20%), Cabernet-Franc and Petit Verdot (5%).
Chateau Margaux also produces a second wine called Le Pavillon Rouge, and a white wine called Le Pavillon Blanc.
The most prestigious vintages of Chateau Margaux wine are: 1900, 1928, 1937, 1945 and 1961.
