Petrus Wine
Petrus dominates the wine appellation Pomerol from its hill. It belongs to this appellation even if the wines from Pomerol have never been classified. Petrus wine is considered as one of the best wines in the region of Bordeaux.
The domain extends over more than 11 hectares between Libourne and the Westside of the appellation Saint-Emilion. The soil is composed of black clay, which is very good for the grape varieties planted on the vineyard (95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet-Franc). The vines have an average age of 40 years old, and the density is about 5500 vine stocks by hectare.
Petrus wine produces about 4500 cases by year. The grapes are harvested manually, and the wine is elevated during 21 months in oak barrels fully renewed every year.
The great vintages of Petrus wine are: 1929, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1961, 1962, 1982, 1989, 1990, 2000 and 2005.
The name of the domain comes from the place name “Petrus”.
It is important to know that the vintage 1991 was not put in sale because of a mediocre harvest. Petrus is a wine very searched out in the world, and the prices can be very high.
In 1920, the vineyard was bought by Mrs. Loubat, a woman coming from Libourne. She succeeded in making Petrus become one of the best wine in the world. This success started the day she presented her wines during Queen Elizabeth wedding: it was the beginning of the myth.
