Founded in 1940, Cote-Rotie is a French AOC of red wine south of Lyon in the Rhone-Alpes region. Covering an area of 280 hectares, the vineyard of Cote-Rotie is very steep, which explains the presence of terraces and stone walls called "cheys." Some of these walls even date back to Roman times. Gaining reputation during the Middle Age and the Renaissance, the wines of Cote Rotie are found on the princely tables of France, England and Russia as far back as the 18th century. However, the first half of the 20th stands as a difficult time because of phylloxera and particularly the war. Most of the vineyard is condemned to wasteland until the 60s-70s. Today, it has regained its original size. The wines of the appellation are composed primarily of Syrah, which brings color and tannins, and a slight part of Viognier, which contributes to the finesse and depth of flavors.
